Whatever happened to Baby Refrain?
Perhaps you, like me, recall the 1994 blockbuster, "The Contract With America" and its stars, Newt Gingrich and Dick Armey. Well, both formerly bright stars have now dwindled to a far-off twinkle and have been replaced with Stepford Congressmen who will reach for your pocket (actually, your credit card in specific) whenever there's not enough hubbub to keep them in the news. Remember this gem from the aforementioned "Contract"?
- a couple of sidenotes:
The Fiscal Responsibility ActAnd how about this one?
An amendment to the Constitution that would require a balanced budget, unless sanctioned by a 3/5 vote in both Houses of Congress (H.J.Res.1, passed by the US House 279-152, 1/4/95; rejected by the US Senate 65-35, 3/2/95), and provide the President with a line-item veto (H.R.2, passed by the US House 294-134, 2/6/95).
The Citizen Legislature ActThis one - defeated, of course - would perhaps be part of the reason we have the spendthrifts in congress we do.
An amendment to the Constitution that would have imposed 12-year term limits on members of the US Congress (i.e. six terms for Representatives, two terms for Senators). H.J.Res.73 rejected by the US House 227-204 (a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds majority not a simple majority), 3/29/95; RC #277
- a couple of sidenotes:
- It would seem Gingrich has been angling himself for some time toward the possibily of running for President. Forget it, sir. While I respect your thinking and your ability to effectively communicate those thoughts, I have no respect for your inability to connect that profound thinking to reality in your personal life. Witness: your 3 marriages and the sordid details therein. A better idea would be to cast a protege who shares your thinking, but can follow through personally. There are no second acts in American lives.
- I went to the premier of "Independence Day" in Fairfax, VA with a group of friends in summer 1996. Strolling in after we had been seated for a bit was none other than Congressman Dick Armey. To no avail, I tried to garner his expressions when the White House and Capitol were destroyed by the green "death ray". Small world, no?
