1. Pride. Congrats on your good works, but...
2. If you are in the country without citizenship or proper documentation, then you are in violation of the law and hence a criminal on some level of the definition.

M-W online defines a criminal as "one who has committed a crime" in the first sense and "one who has been convicted of a crime" in the second.

That said, am I a criminal for exceeding the speed limit much of the time? Yes in both definitions above; I have both exceeded the speed limit and been convicted of doing so.

So to the young lady with the sign: yes, you are a criminal, but no more so than am I.
