The Path to 9/11: Part II
The second night of the ABC docudrama, The Path to 9/11 was, in a word, superb. It really was done that well.
I have to say the highlights for me were twofold: first, the messages that ran counter to everything we've heard previously about the Clinton administration - well, at least the downplaying of their roles in the run up to 9/11 - especially the self-serving Sandy Berger. And 2, I loved the scene titles, particularly how they transitioned off the screen with movement. Nice subtle effect.
My only gripes are: 1, I'd like to see it pre-Clintonista edits and 2, I was expecting it to be in 16:9 widescreen, which was not the case here in Richmond. However, "Dancing with the Stars" on the same channel was in spectacular HD last evening. So I am assuming it is more program content. A shame.
All in all, a fabulous presentation. Something I would have paid $$ to see in a theater. And kudos to ABC for eliminating the commercial interruptions. The pause on night 2, for the President's address to the nation was a poignant and powerful touch. It worked.

3 Comments:
While President Bush and other Republican politicians spent the day exploiting the memory of those we lost five years ago, the nation overlooked a grim milestone: More Americans have now died in Iraq than died on 9/11. Iraq didn't attack us on that day, and our misguided policy there has now taken more American lives than Al Qaeda.
Here are the numbers: 3,015 Americans have died in Iraq as of September 9.
2,666 of these were military deaths and 349 were civilians
It seems odd to choose as a highlight "messages[lies] that ran counter to what we've heard previously[truth] about the Clinton administration". I don't understand how lies and fiction can be the highlight of a supposedly true story, except for the fact that we prefer to hear what we wish was true even if it is not actually true.
anonymous 1 - Ann Coulter makes a good case for why Clinton was at his best as a terrorist fighter WHILE being hammered by Republicans.
Only in 1998 did the Clinton-haters ("normal people") force Clinton into a military response. Solely because of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Clinton finally lobbed a few bombs in the general direction of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden.
In August 1998, three days after Clinton admitted to the nation that he did in fact have "sex with that woman," he bombed Afghanistan and Sudan, doing about as much damage as another Clinton fusillade did to a blue Gap dress.
The day of Clinton's scheduled impeachment, Dec. 18, 1998, he bombed Iraq. This accomplished two things: (1) It delayed his impeachment for one day, and (2) it got a lot of Democrats on record about the monumental danger of Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction.
So don't tell me impeachment "distracted" Clinton from his aggressive pursuit of terrorists. He never would have bombed anyone if it weren't for the Clinton-haters.
